Sigiriya

The legendary Lion Rock fortress in the sky

07.9569° N · 80.7597° E

A 5th-century rock fortress and palace rising about 200 metres above the jungle, Sigiriya is Sri Lanka's most iconic sight and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century, Sigiriya — the Lion Rock — is one of Asia's most remarkable ancient sites. Climb past landscaped water gardens, the famous cloud-maiden frescoes and the giant lion's paws to reach the ruins of a royal palace on the summit.

The views across the forests of the Cultural Triangle are breathtaking, especially early in the morning or late afternoon. Nearby Pidurangala Rock offers a quieter climb with a stunning view of Sigiriya itself.
