Sri Lanka has two monsoons, which means there is always a sunny side of the island. Here is how to choose the right region for your travel month.
One of the best things about Sri Lanka is that it is a year-round destination. Two monsoon seasons affect different parts of the island at different times, so when one coast is wet, the other is usually sunny.
December to April: west and south coasts, hill country
This is the main season for the beaches of Bentota, Galle and Mirissa, and for whale watching from Mirissa. The Cultural Triangle and the hill country are also pleasant, with clear mornings in Nuwara Eliya and Ella.
May to September: east coast and Cultural Triangle
When the south-west monsoon brings rain to the west and south, the east coast — Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Pasikudah — enjoys calm seas and sunshine. Sigiriya, Dambulla and Anuradhapura are usually dry.
October and November: inter-monsoon
Expect a mix of sunshine and afternoon showers across the island. Prices are often lower and the countryside is beautifully green.
Our tip
There is no bad time to visit — only the wrong route for the season. Tell us your travel dates and we will plan an itinerary that follows the sunshine.
