Mirissa is one of the best places in the world to see blue whales. Learn when to go, what to expect and how to choose a responsible tour.
Just off Sri Lanka's southern tip, the continental shelf drops into deep water close to shore — perfect conditions for whales. That is why Mirissa has become one of the best places on earth to see the blue whale, the largest animal ever to live.
When to go
The main season runs from November to April, when the sea is calm. Trips usually leave early in the morning and last around three to five hours.
What you might see
Blue whales are the highlight, but sperm whales, Bryde's whales, spinner dolphins and flying fish are also common.
Tips for a great trip
Choose an operator that follows responsible whale-watching guidelines, bring sun protection and a light jacket, and have a light breakfast if you are prone to seasickness.
Whale watching can be added to any of our south coast itineraries — just let us know.
